Not a Piece of Cake is a long durational performance that questions the positionality of women within a patriarchal and Catholic society. The catalyst for this performance-based research was a text about Timna's grandmother. The outcome is shaped by personal memories, family history, and their fictionalization, translated into movement, text, and work with objects, showcasing arduous physical endurance and struggle to reach a final destination.
This practice-based research follows the idea of philosopher and media theorist Walter Benjamin, who suggested that revealing the tragedies of the ancestors serves as a gift to the audience for a better future influenced by the past.
Not a Piece of Cake was part of Vivaar, a project that combines live performance and Augmented Reality curated by Jonas Stampe. The performance, presented as a hologram, was created in collaboration with XR experts Terence Quinn, Chris Follows, and Grzesiek Sedek. The work premiered during the professional preview of the Venice Biennale 2024 and can now be experienced as extended reality.
